JOB TITLE: TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT SPECIALIST, HIGH SCHOOL

SUPERVISED BY:                          Building Principal SUPERVISES: NIA

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION: Responsible for supporting, troubleshooting, performing maintenance on, repairing and planning for the high school's computer network, workstations, telephone/voicemail system and keyless entry system. Supervise, train, monitor and encourage high school student lab helpers.

Frequency

1. Respond  to and fulfill requests for technology assistance received via telephone, email or in person.  Circulate the hallways and frequent labs where students and staff are working in order to be aware of and provide support opportunities to users. Be aware of different requirements of curriculum and administrative users and offer

appropriate ad hoc support.

2. Plan, assign, direct and guide work; address complaints and resolve problems; train; monitor and encourage Computer Lab Paraprofessional and student lab helpers. Keep them engaged in technological activities such as cleaning printers, building Ethernet cables, troubleshooting laptop problems, helping fellow students, replacing

computer parts, recycling obsolete parts and helping teachers. Assist with supervising students in the Tiger Lab.

3. Learn about and identify software, hardware and working practices that are currently in place; anticipate future requirements to fulfill the needs of staff, administrators and students; and design, plan and implement required technology changes, including moving furniture, equipment, cabling and wireless networks in classrooms,

offices and labs.

4. Effectively communicate technical information to high school staff, students, administrators, parents, district

representatives and vendors via email, telephone and written communication. Ensure communication is at an appropriate level and in a suitable style.

5. Continuously seek to broaden knowledge and skills by researching problems and finding solutions, exploring the Internet, contacting peers and reading trade journals to stay current with technology in education. Participate in educational opportunities when available. Document acquired knowledge and successful results for reference in

the future.

6. Monitor equipment for signs of damage and possible danger to staff and students, identify needed repairs and perform a wide range of hardware repairs and upgrades. Encourage safe use of technological equipment at all

times.

7. Train individual staff and students by creating and utilizing help sheets, providing individual coaching and organizing training groups. Select the best method of training based on the technology confidence level of the individual. Ensure understanding of how technology can enhance teaching, learning and management at the high schools, and be willing to adopt technology to fit appropriately within rules and policies established by the

District.

8. Create and maintain user accounts and user permissions on the Novell network, individual computers, keyless entry doors, voice mail and out-bound dialing features.

9. Respond to and resolve problems after-hours related to the computer network; phone, bell, clock or public address systems; and/or security issues related to the keyless entry system.

10. Purchase technology-related consumables and equipment, following school procedures. Assist with estimating future budget requirements, and plan purchases for future, large technological items. Ensure warranties are properly utilized, including ordering replacement power supplies or motherboards for lab computers under

warranty.

11. Maintain a secure network by monitoring and updating antivirus and anti-spyware software at the computer and

network level. Work with the District to refine firewall restrictions. Be aware of and vigilant about computer- use policies and limit access to resources when or if the policies have been violated.

12. Design and implement the school policy on asset disposal. Fundraise, allocate funds, strip, package and deliver obsolete assets to the recycling center.

13. Create and implement a structured roll-out of new hardware and software  including  procurement,  scheduling, testing, needs assessment and trainin_g if needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  •   High school diploma or equivalent, plus technical courses in microcomputer support and networking concepts.
  •   Over two years and up to and including three years of experience in providing technical support, repair, maintenance and troubleshooting of networks, desktop computers, wireless laptops, Microsoft Office and other varieties of software. Some Macintosh experience helpful. Experience working with teenage students and/or willingness to do so.
