POSITION TITLE: Special Education Interpreter and Liaison

 

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Services & Language Services Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY:  


  • This individual is the main point of contact for special education staff to assist in collaboration and communication with linguistically diverse families who have children who are being considered for special education services or who receive special education services.
  • Responsible for interpreting linguistically diverse families and/or assisting staff in communicating with students and parents and vice versa and serve as an onsite and virtual interpreter for special education events, conferences, and meetings at Summit School District Schools and at the Central Office.
  • Translate, proofread and validate SPED related documents and materials as assigned by Language Services and/or direct supervisor

  • Provide written translation of official district or school special education communications and documents for both internal and external audiences as coordinated by Language Services.
  • Provide oral English-Spanish interpretation of official district special education meetings, activities, or events for school and district-related matters
  • Utilizing oral and written skills in English and Spanish to assist special education staff in communicating with students and parents
  • Responsible for written/oral translation services in Spanish/English for school/district special education needs, including but not limited to: special education documents, including 504 Plans and Individualized Education Program (IEP), Child Find evaluations, written information related to special education performance, and any other federally mandated documents
  • Provide oral interpretation services in Spanish/English for district level and school-specific needs; on-site, over the phone, or virtually, including but not limited to special education meetings, parent/school meetings and/or conferences related to special education performance, etc. many of which will occur outside of regular school hours
  • Serve as a liaison and support for spanish speaking families seeking information regarding special education programming
  • Assist in the establishment and maintenance of communication and outreach between the special education programs and the community
  • Support special education activity and event creation, facilitation, coordination, outreach, and planning
  • Observe and Counsel translators and interpreters as to the appropriate terminology to be used in district situations and advise of the best practices, processes and behavior while offering interpretation services under the direction of Language Services.
  • Gain expertise in the area of special education and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in order to appropriately support families with accessing support
  • Work with Communications Team to field inquiries, coordinate projects, and provide services to the district and schools
  • Demonstrates the commitment to build and maintain a safe, fair, and respectful working and learning environment that honors the cultural diversity in students and staff at events.
  • Maintain confidentiality of any student information that is shared during meetings, events, etc
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated  experience in oral interpretation into the desired language
  • Native speaker in the target languages demanded by the position
  • Previous work in PK-12 educational settings 
  • Ability to pass shadowed interpretation event.
